Dosing Your CBD

How to Find the Right Dose of CBD

As Cannabis use is on the rise, more and more people are turning to Cannabidol (CBD) for relief from a wide array of symptoms including anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, epilepsy; the list goes on and on. The one question everyone has when starting CBD is how much do I take? Since the FDA has not regulated the CBD industry there is no official Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) or serving size.

Many people hear that "just one drop," or "a dropper full of CBD a day" is all you need. While these can certainly be correct doses for some, it is ultimately misinformation as there are several variables at play when finding the dose that works for you. Simply put, one size does NOT fit all.

That's why we've put together this helpful guide to give you the tools to more accurately dose your CBD, whether it be for you, your child, or your pet!

Factors that determine your dose of CBD include:

  • Body Weight - a higher body weight means you will likely need a higher dose of CBD.

  • Body Chemistry - your body chemistry is determined by a multitude of different factors including genetics and what you put in your body, so everyone's body chemistry is different.

  • Severity of Symptoms - more severe symptoms like chronic pain, severe anxiety, epilepsy, etc.. require a higher dose than acute symptoms.

  • Concentration of CBD - higher concentration of CBD likely mean you will need to take less of it to get the desired effects.

Deciding Your Dose

A good way to start finding your dose is by following a simple rule: 1 mg per 10 lbs. of body weight. However, some may need to try anywhere from 2-5 mg per 10 lbs. if symptoms are more severe, but remember, start on the low end and increase your dose gradually so you don't go through all of your CBD or end up inadvertently taking more than you need. Since everyone is different, it is impossible to say your first try dosing will be the right one, it takes some experimentation to find out what works right for you.
Note: For children and pets the rule changes slightly. For a child, .25 - .5 mg per 10 lbs. is recommended to start. With pets, 1 - 4 mg per 10 lbs.

How to Measure Your Dose With a CBD Tincture Oil

CBD tincture oils are one of the most popular ways to consume CBD due to their ease of use and convenience. While all tinctures should clearly display the CBD concentration on the bottle, not all display how much CBD is in the dropper. It only takes a little math to figure that out. Most droppers sold with a CBD tincture hold 1 milliliter (mL) of liquid. Use this formula to determine the amount of CBD per 1 mL dropper:
[Total CBD Concentration in Bottle] ÷ [Total Milliliters in Bottle] = CBD per dropper.
Example: 1500 mg ÷ 30 ml = 50 mg per dropper.
Say your daily dose is 25 mg, and your dropper contains 50 mg, simply fill the dropper only half way.
